Civil society declares war on canines
Eminent social worker leads protest demonstration
2/18/2012 11:11:30 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 18: It was a protest with a difference. Prominent members of the civil society registered their protest in the heart of summer capital today. Significantly no anti-India slogans were chanted. They urged the government to relieve cities and towns of stray canines. Zareef Ahmad Zareef, a prominent social worker led the protest demonstrations. He had hinted at `direct action' incase the concerned failed to take appropriate action to fight the menace `within fifteen days'.
Early this month, a boy was mauled by stray dogs in Lal Bazar locality. The boy was rushed to hospital with more than 100 bites. He survived. The incident evoked severe reaction from the civil society. The victim's father fired hundreds of shots at dogs from his 12 Bore gun. Earlier a woman succumbed when she fell from a bike driven by her son in the old city. The bike was chased by stray dogs. The population of stray dogs has increased considerably especially in Srinagar. In August last year the High Court has directed the Srinagar Municipality (SMC) to cage all the dogs in Srinagar within two weeks. The HC directed the SMC to forget about sterilization. "Catching the dogs is most important", the HC held. According to data furnished by the Municipality, the city of Srinagar has around 200,000 stray dogs. The city needs only 5000 dogs for scavenging. The rest, experts believe have to go. The Municipality had plans to poison the dogs. Poison worth Rs 15 lakhs, internal sources said, had been procured but could not be administered as the news was leaked to animal rights activists who came to the rescue of the canines. The municipality had plans to sterlize the dogs. However, the plan could not be implemented for various reasons ranging from non-availibility of the veterinary doctors to lack of trained staff for catching the dogs. Interestingly, the dogs are now un-represented in the court.
The lawyer who represented them has withdrawn from the case for `personal reasons'.
