Certificate course on Women and Health concludes at MIER College | | | early times report Jammu, Feb 18: Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies conducted 15 days certificate course on "Women and Health" for the B. Ed students of MIER College of Education. The main objectives of the certificate course were to develop awareness among women about the socio-psychological and medico-legal factors that shape women's health, to identify the connection between gender and health and to make the girl students understand diverse factors like class, caste, section or sexual orientation etc. affecting women's experiences in relation to their health and reproduction. The focus of the course was addressing the health issues faced by the girls and women during the course of their lives and their attitude towards health seeking behavior. The initiative was taken by the centre with a view to keep women updated and healthy as it has been observed that women give least priority to themselves as compared to other family members as far as health matters are concerned. Girls on the other hand find it difficult and uncomfortable to seek doctor's advice due to some physical, social or family taboos. B L Raina, HOD, M.Ed, MIER was the resource person for the first module of "Understanding Women's Health" in which general scenario about women's health was covered. The second module covered "Mental Health" of women was taken up by Manisha Kohli, lecturer in Govt. College for Women Gandhi Nagar, who is also a clinical psychologist. Students were taught techniques to adopt positive way of thought process and develop confidence. The resource person for the third module of "Reproductive Health" of women was Anil Mehta, senior Gynecologist, Gandhi Nagar Hospital. The students were educated about the female reproductive anatomy and also taught many techniques to maintain hygiene in order to live a safe and healthy reproductive life. Besides, the students were taught about the contemporary reproductive technologies and also their reproductive rights. The modules were divided into four sessions for each resource person and students were given practical activities also besides feedback sessions and evaluation. The students were evaluated on the basis of their basic knowledge about the women health issues by the resource persons. All the resource persons appreciated the efforts done by the Centre. The director of the centre conveyed that this is a tremendous endeavour and would go a long way as the participants shall work as key change agents in propagating the society about health issues. The programme was conducted in supervision of Surinder Kaur, coordinator, SSGCWS, MIER College of Education. |
