JAMMU, Feb 18: A record 1200 athletes, including 300 women, drawn from 31 battalions shall take part in the five-day annual inter-battalion sports meet of the Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police being held from February 21 at different venues, here.
While two major events of athletics and hockey shall be conducted at University of Jammu grounds, the shooting competition is scheduled to take place at Sunjwan shooting range of the J&K Police. Rest of the nine team events shall be conducted at Gulshan Ground and District Police Lines.
A few events of lawn tennis, shooting, table tennis and badminton, exclusively meant for the Gazetted Officers (GOs) shall take place at GOs mess.
This was disclosed by the organizing secretary of the meet, Additional Director General of Police, Armed, Law and Order, K Rajendra in a press conference held here this afternoon.
He said that the competition shall be held following the laid down rules and regulations of the All India Police Sports Control Board under the guidance of coaches and technical officials of the J&K Police.
Last year, the men's overall championship trophy was clinched by Indian Reserve Police (IRP) 8th battalion while women's title was bagged by IRP 15th battalion on the basis of points secured in different events.
"It will be out of this inter-battalion competition that a strong contingent of athletes would be raised which shall represent Armed Police in the Inter-Zone Meet to be held next month at Jammu," informed the ADGP.
21 outstanding boys promoted
In reply to a specific question, the ADGP disclosed that about 21 outstanding sports persons absorbed by the police in different disciplines as Special Police Officer (SPOs) have been promoted as Constables considering their performance in the All India Police Meets. "We are here to encourage the talent by one or the other way, so the outstanding boys have been confirmed as Constables," he said.
Marathon in March
To involve youth in constructive activities, the J&K Police under its Civic Action programme has decided to conduct a Jammu Marathon in the month of March.
Invitation to all
Being organizing secretary of the inter-battalion meet of Armed Police, an invitation has been extended to sports lovers to come and watch the sports events to be organised in two different sessions of morning and evening. "Sports lovers are welcomed to the police venues to enjoy their time watching the close contests and also to encourage the athletes competing for different events," said ADGP.
