Sham launches 1st round of Pulse Polio Campaign-2012 | | | early times report JAMMU, Feb 19: Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Sham Lal Sharma launched the first round of Pulse Polio Campaign-2012 in Jammu and Kashmir by administering polio drops to the children at JRC Home for Handicapped Udhay-wala, here today. The reason for choosing the venue for the purpose was to draw the attention of the society towards the polio victims and to spread the message that with the timely vaccination of children of the age group 0 to 5 years, the polio can be eradicated forever. Once the polio occurs, it cannot be cured even with the best treatment and spending lot of money the minister said. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that with the constant efforts of the employees of health department and massive support of the society, no fresh polio case has been reported from any part of the State during the past couple of years. He stressed the need for maintaining constant vigil on the situation and covering hundred per cent children by administering pulse polio drops in every round of campaign. He cautioned against any let up in the campaign to deal with this dreaded disease. Emphasizing to step up the mass awareness campaign through different media in the shape of a strong movement against the dreaded diseases like Polio/HIV AIDS and Cancer, the Minister said that such diseases weaken the socio-economic conditions of the people and need of the hour is to make collective efforts to get rid of these dangerous diseases. Meanwhile, Minister for Medical and Technical Education, R S Chib inaugurated Pulse Polio Campaign at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh Hospital, Immuniz-ation Clinic in New Paedia-tric Block today. He asked people to avail this opportunity of free polio drops being administered to their children below the age of 05 years which is a step forward to eradicated the dreaded disease" POLIO" he said that more than 17.00 lacs children are going to be vaccinated across the state. Polio strikes irrespective of religion, caste or creed and we must ensure that every child below the five years, especially the new born gets the polio drops, he added. Polio being on of the crippling disease leads to handicap if not prevented at this stage by administering polio drops, he asserted. All the children below the age of 5 years were given two drops of oral polio vaccine. These drops were in addition to the routine immunization for polio and other killer diseases. The pulse polio programme was started in 1995. To further enhance the efforts of Government to completely eradicate the disease, intensified Pulse Polio was started in 1999. In this, after the immunization in booths house to house services is given to all the children below 5 years, who have missed the Pulse Polio drops from the booths. Like in other parts of the state, Chief Medical Officer Kishtwar Dr. Ajay Gupta launched Pulse Polio Immunization campaign in Kishtwar Dr. District by immunizing the children's aging between 0-5 years from Bus Stand Kishtwar in presence of Block Medical Kishtwar Dr. Pervaiz Iqbal Wani. While talking to the media persons outside Pulse Polio Immunization Booth at Bus Stand Kishtwar, CMO Kishtwar Dr. Ajay Gupta informed that near about 36700 children's between 0-5 years will be immunized against polio in Kishtwar District. |
