Is Congress high command really undecided on Peerzada resignation? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 19: Typical of him, Dr. Farooq Abdullah, union minister for new and renewable energy, has fired another salvo. Taking to reporters on the sidelines of a party meeting here, Dr. Farooq said the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi is yet to decide on the resignation submitted to her by Peerzada Sayeed! Dr. Farooq also said Peerzada had overstepped his brief by claiming that he had been told to continue as a minister in the coalition government by none other than Madam Sonia Gandhi herself. This peculiar situation have thrown up a scenario where it can be safely said that Peerzada Sayeed is continuing in the State cabinet by default and because of the indecision at the highest level in the Congress party. If Dr. Farooq is to be believed, then all is not well within the Congress party even at its highest level. On a matter of such importance where a minister has submitted his resignation following his alleged involvement in an exam scandal that involves his son and also the department headed by the minister, the Congress high command deciding to sleep over the decision whether or not the minister should quit is simply baffling. That the Congress President Sonia Gandhi would decide on the resignation of the minister only after the elections in UP and other states are over, as stated by Dr. Farooq Abdullah, speaks of gross mishandling of party affairs. How can the senior most leadership of the country's oldest political party decide to sleep on an issue that pertains to nothing less than alleged misuse of office by one of the party's ministers in the country's politically most sensitive state? It is a commentary on the state of affairs within the Congress and at the same time it is a commentary on the seriousness with which highly sensitive party issues are decided, given again, if what Dr. Farooq Abdullah has said is true. Alarmed by the internal bickering within the party, the Congress high command had asked all its leaders in the State to fall in line and strengthen the party. The high command also reportedly asked its leaders in J&K not to make statements and inferences those would only damage the image of the party in the State. What could be more damaging than the decision of the party's high command choosing to sleep over a highly sensitive issue whose political fallout could affect the party's image among the people? Without wasting further time, the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi must clear the air. People close to the President who act as her advisors must ensure that nothing happens that could damage the fair image of party president who is held in the highest esteem for her personal honesty, integrity and straightforward handling of issues. If someone has been ill advising Sonia Gandhi on this sensitive issue, he would only be serving the cause of those who are bent on damaging the prospects of the Congress in the State. There should be no questions about how Madam Sonia Gandhi decides the sensitive issue. She is within her rights to allow the minister to continue in the State cabinet, but the suspense must end over this issue that has hogged the imagination of the people for nearly a month now. |
