Shivratri celebrated at Kathua | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT KATHUA, Feb 20: Shivratri literally means the great night of Shiva or the night of Shiva. It is celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day of the Maaga or phalaguna month of Hindu calendar. It is believed that during the samudra manthan, a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. This terrified the Gods and demons as the poison was capable of destroying the entire world, and they ran to Shiva for help. To protect the world from its evil effects, Shiva drank the deathly poison but held it in his throat instead of swallowing it. This made his throat turn blue, and he was given the name Neelakantha, the blue-throated one. Shivaratri is the celebration of this event by which Shiva saved the world. Since many different calendars are followed by various ethno-linguistic groups of India, the month and the Tithi name are not uniform all over India. Celebrated in the dark fortnight or Krishna paksha (waning moon) of the month of Maagha according to the Shalivahana or Gujarati Vikrama or Phalguna according to the Vikrama era. The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of bael or Bilva/Vilvam leaves to lord Shiva, all day fasting and an all night long vigil. On this very solemn occasion the temples in district Kathua are decorated with the electric bulbs and with music instruments, the people are offering their holy offers to pray before the Shiva be holding the religious hymn and stories of Shiva in order to seek the peaceful and prosperous planet earth.
