| Efforts afoot to promote religious tourism in Akhnoor: Sham | | | Early Times Report
AKHNOOR, Feb 20: Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma has said that Government has been contemplating to promote religious tourism in Akhnoor, adding that town has rich historical background and all out efforts will be made to showcase and explore its unique heritage. Interacting with the devotees at the ancient Kameshwar temple at Akhnoor on the occasion of Maha Shivratri, the Minister said that in and around Akhnoor, there are many ancient revered sites of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Buddhists, which indicates that the area once remained a hub of religious activities and many sufi and saints worshiped here. He said that Government will restore the pristine glory of Akhnoor town and promote all ancient sites to give impetus to tourist activities in the area. The Minister said that the Government will develop a new tourist circuit to divert the pilgrims of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji via Shiv Khori-Akhnoor-Jammu to prolong their stay for which suitable infrastructure will be developed along the entire track right from Katra to Jammu via Reasi-Akhnoor. He said in this direction already five bridges over the river Chenab have been constructed to strengthen the road communication and from Reasi to Jammu via Akhnoor a considerable distance has been curtailed. A survey is underway to construct another road from new bridge to Reasi along the River Chenab to promote the scenic beauty of the area for the attraction of tourists from different parts of the world, said Mr. Sharma. He said that with the recent visit of Budhist Guru Dalai Lama to ancient site at Ambaran, the Akhnoor town has received the world attention and in the years to come, the area will become the centre of attraction for religious tourism. He said that new sites of tourist importance will also be identified and suitably developed in the area. |
