JAMMU, Feb 21: Constable Naresh Kumar of Indian Reserve Police (IRP) 3rd battalion won the 21-kilometer marathon race while gold in 5000 meters event went to PSI, Ziaur Rehman of 7th battalion of Armed Police on the opening day of the annual inter-battalion sports meet of J&K Armed Police at Gulshan Ground, here today. In two other athletics events decided today, Latief Ahmed and Ct Zubair Ahmed of IR 17th clinched gold in shot put and long jump respectively. The five-day meet was declared open by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Armed and Law and Order in a well attended function at Gulshan Ground, here. Speaking to the gathering of participating contingents from 31 battalions of the Armed Police and other distinguished gathering of senior serving and retired police officers, he disclosed that a centrally heated international standard swimming pool will be in place in next two years. To encourage the participants and imbibe the spirit of discipline among them, the ADGP announced three best contingents in march past. While IR 17th bagged first place, the second place went to IR 19th. IR 3rd was declared third. Two other contingents of AP 8th battalion and IR 12th battalion were awarded consolation prizes. Earlier, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Armed Police, Gulzar Singh Slathia welcomed the participating athletes and other invited guests. He presented a detailed report of the five-day long event. Later, vote of thanks was presented by DIG, Dr Kamal Saini. Shot Put: Ct Latief Ahmed, IR 17th, Ist; Ct. Pawan Kumar, IR 16th, 2nd and Ct Jhankar Kumar, IR 16th, 3rd. Long Jump: Ct Zubair Ahmed, IR 17th, Ist; Ct Maninder Singh, IR 19th, 2nd and Ct Showkat Ahmed, IR 8th, 3rd.
