Maha Shivratri, Grameen Mela held at Khoneshwar Shiv Temple | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 21 : A Maha Shivratri-cum-Grameen Mela was organized at Khoneshwar Shiv Temple, Khoon, Udhampur in the periphery of the famous Mansar Lake in Udhampur district by Destitute and Handicapped Welfare Association (DAHWA) inconjunction with district administration. Thousands of people from the peripheral areas participated and and paid obedience at the Aap Shambu Temple, notwithstanding the day long downpour.The objective of the event was to create awareness among the rural masses about the development programmes of the government. During the mela, various departments like Rural Development, Health, Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Sheep Husbandry, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Youth Sports and Services, Employment, MNREGA established their stalls which remained the major attraction for the rural populace. They also distributed literature of their respective departments among the people. The Health and Animal husbandry departments distributed free medicines while Agriculture and Horticulture departments provided various tools on subsidized rates to the farmers. Chairman DAHWA, Surat Singh Sumbria, who is also President Maha Shiv Ratri Grameen Mela Committee, highlighted the historical significance of this century's old ancient temple which occupies 17th place in most revered religious destinations in northern part of the country. The temple has different kinds of fishes in the Bowli (water Body) and flowing water bodies fortunate the tourists in which blooded stones speaks the tale of history. He said that creation of this temple is related to Pandvas which gave birth to Mansar and Sanasar lakes. He urged upon the government to initiate necessary steps for development of this beautiful village which is blessed with this ancient temple, historic caves with idols of Lord Shiva, Parvati and Pandvas on the lines of Shiv Khori and similar other pilgrim places". Sumbria appealed upon the government to observe the annual Mahashivratri festival officially. He said that it will go a long way in satiating the religious inspirations of the devotees and the people of the area, as infrastructural development will give rise to the influx of pilgrim tourists which will eventually lead to larger economic activity in the area. He expressed gratitude to the district administration, State Information department, JKAACL, Sarpanchs, Panchs and prominent citizens for their cooperation in making the event a grand success. On the occasion, cultural programme was presented by Information Department, JKAACL, School Children, Youth Sports and Services besides local artists depicting various social evils. Block Development Officer, Kishore and other representatives of all the departments dwelt in detail about their programmes meant for socio-economic empowerment of people of rural and far-off pockets. Sarpanch, Chain Singh presented vote of thanks. Committee members including Romesh Chander, Ved Sharma, Adeep Badyal, Gopal Singh, Satpal Sharma, Swdesh Sharma, Naresh Kumar and Puran Chand also spoke on the occasion. Later, bhandara was served to the devotees. |
