Community visit, awareness campaign organized | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 21 : Environment Unit of MIER College of Education organized two activities - a visit to Karwanda area and awareness drive for school students under the Project NEAC (National Environment Awareness Campaign 2011-12). A group of 30 members of the Unit led by Monika Bajaj, Incharge Environment Unit visited the Karwanda area which houses a pond, temples and adjoining vegetation. The visit was aimed at highlighting the theme of the year i.e. 'Forests for Sustainable Livelihood', and bringing about awareness among the students regarding the natural bounty surrounding the city of Jammu. The students took a round of the area and talked to the local inhabitants who told them about the importance of the pond and the plants existing in the area. The students came to know about the scarcity of water in the area and how the locals use pond water for washing clothes etc. They also observed the big trees which form an integral part of the lives of the locals and were amazed at the astonishing biodiversity present in the area. The visit culminated with a lively discussion among the students. In another activity, the students of Environment unit of MIER College of Education went to Model Academy to create awareness among the students of the school. They spread awareness regarding the conservation of natural resources. The objective of the activity was to develop attitude of conservation among teenagers in the age group of 11 to 14 years. The students were motivated and impressed by the thought provoking ideas. They were motivated to apply these ideas in their real life. |
