Governor inaugurates National Seminar at JU
Calls for closer cooperation among Asian countries for prosperity of this region

JAMMU, Feb 21 : N. N. Vohra, Jammu and Kashmir Governor, today said that a closer cooperation among Asian countries is the key to the all round progress and prosperity of this region as had been envisioned by Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, first Prime Minister of the country.
The Governor, as Chief Guest, was speaking after inaugurating a 2-day National Seminar on "Nehru's Vision of Asia and Contemporary Asian Reality", organized by the Nehru Studies Centre, University of Jammu, here today.
The Governor observed that the elimination of terrorism, which has engulfed a large part of Asia and the world at large, is a major challenge which calls for forging very close cooperation among all the Asian region countries.
Recalling the Asian Relations Conference which our first Prime Minister had convened in New Delhi in March 1947, the Governor said that this initiative symbolized Panditji's vision to see the emergence of Asia and the establishment of the Asian identity in the realm of world affairs The Conference provided an opportunity for the newly independent countries in the region to express their aspirations. Describing the theme of the Seminar as interesting and relevant, the Governor observed that it would provide a very good opportunity to look back and assess the reason for some of the principal ingredients of Nehru's vision, particularly the Panchsheel approach, not being able to reach materialization. The Governor, who is the Chancellor of the University, congratulated Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice Chancellor, Jammu University and the Nehru Studies Centre, for organizing this Seminar. He wished the participants highly fruitful deliberations. The Governor was honoured on the occasion by presenting to him a memento by the Vice Chancellor of the University.
Earlier, the Governor lit the ceremonial lamp to mark the commencement of the National Seminar. Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, thanked the Governor for taking keen interest in the growth of the University and promotion of higher education in the State. He also spoke about the varied aspects of the theme of the Seminar. In her Keynote Address, Prof. Madhu Bhalla, Department of East Asian Studies, University of Delhi, dwelt on Pt. Nehru's contribution in constructing Asian identity. She also threw light on the role of Asian region in the emerging world scenario.
In his welcome address, Prof. Baljit Singh, Director, Nehru Studies Centre, University of Jammu, introduced the theme of the Seminar and gave details thereof.
Prof. Anurag Gangal, Head, Department of Political Science, Jammu University, presented a Vote of Thanks.
Among those present on the occasion were I. P. Khosla, former Ambassador and Editor-in-Chief, South Asian Survey.
Delegates of the Seminar, senior functionaries of the Jammu University, Heads of Departments, Faculty Members, research scholars and students were present on the occasion.
