| Improper drainage system sends life, movement out of gear | | | Pankhuri Aggarwal Jammu, Feb 21: Lack of proper drainage system and maintenance of proper roads in Jammu were exposed very badly when a brief spell of rain created almost a flood like situation in many parts of the Jammu city. The tall claims of the Jammu Municipality Corporation were yet again exposed. The basic laboratory area of Jammu is badly choked and the public has to suffer very badly. The lack of proper drains in the Canal Road area has created a pool of dirty water which may also prove to be a breading place for mosquitoes and ultimately lead to outburst of epidemics in the area, if the Jammu municipal corporation fails to take further immediate steps to tackle the situation, till it is in the hands. The traffic of the Canal Road is also very badly suffering because adjoining to the laboratory area there is Akhnoor road which is always flooded with heavy traffic of buses and mini-buses, plus the local cars and scooters. In that case if the Laboratory area is completely choked, the traffic is diverted to Akhnoor road adding to more chaos and traffic problems to the area. The localities complain of taking long routes during raining days in case of emergency. Avika Mahajan, a student rued, "My tuition is near railway station and it takes around an hour to reach my home in mini-buses. But due to rains almost all the lanes are chocked with water. The road towards Rajpura from railway station was completely submerged in water. The local buses took long routes and it took me almost two hours to reach at my destination. The corporation does not have any proper system to drains out water immediately after the rains though this situation is seen every year during the rainy season". The blocking of the some of the major roads in Jammu like Vikram chowk, B.C road, the Railway line road due to the rains causes an adverse effect on the traffic as the traffic moves at a snail's pace. The commuters have to face many gridlocks and traffic congestions till they reach there place. "It's not for the first time such a situation emerged. It usually happens after rains every year now and then. We are living with it and have to live with it as we have lost all hopes of any kind of improvement from the municipal corporation", said Nalin Gupta, a shopkeeper of canal road. "In some of the areas, sewerage also started mixing with the rain water. This water finds its ways into houses and shops which can become one of the reasons of skin and water borne diseases", said Kamaya Goel, a housewife. The administration has no justification for any such situation. Locals have voiced their angst against this but there has been no improvement in the drainage system of the city. Repeated requests during the last many years have fallen on deaf ears. |
