New Drug Policy would discourage profiteering of spurious drugs: Sham Lal

SRINAGAR, Feb 21: In the backdrop of newly introduced Drug Policy by the Jammu and Kashmir Government, the Minister for Health and Horticulture, Sham Lal Sharma had an interactive session with representative of civil society, eminent citizens and media persons to clear the misconception regarding new Drug Policy. The Minister said that new drug policy is aimed at discouraging the proliferation of spurious drugs in the market and for bringing transparency in the procurement and distribution of drugs. He said that the new policy will help in curbing the activities of drug mafia. He said that this policy would eliminate the unfair means of drug prescription and dispensation. He further said that the policy would introduce Essential Drug list to be prepared by the experts to rationalise the drug prescriptions by the doctors.
He said that the policy envisages strengthening of Drug Testing Laboratories by providing equipment, qualified analysts. He said that approved private sector would also be involved in this process. Besides, he said, Pharma Co-Vigilance Centres would be established to monitor and document adverse drug reactions and events.
The Minister was accompanied by Commissioner Secretary, G.A. Peer, Director, Health Services Kashmir, Dr. Saleem-ur-Rehman and other senior officers of the Health department.
Earlier, Sharma addressed a two-day RNTCP Regional Review Meeting of Northern States on programmatic management of drug resistant T.B here today, organised by the Health department, Kashmir in collaboration with State TB Control Centre.
The Minister in his address said that DOTS is available at all Health Centres big and small of the State.The Minister urged the Health department to create awareness about the TB at mass level to eradicate this fatal disease. He informed that Chest Disease hospitals in Srinagar and Jammu would be further strengthened by equipping these with latest technology.
The Minister said that the government is liberally funding health department for providing basic health facilities to the people and need is that health functionaries should worth with responsibility and sincerity. Among others, State TB officers and TB officers of Northern State of India participated the meeting.
