LC poll may ' re ignite' sparks of factionalism in Congress | Kmr vs Jammu region 'claim' for berth to get louder | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 21: In the marathon of political issues which state unit of Congress has been beleaguered with , a fresh issue that can once again ignite the spark of factionalism is the decision with regard to naming a candidate for the lone seat of Upper House that has fallen vacant after demise of Yashpal Khajuria, poll notification for which is being issued on March 6. Notwithstanding some names that have begun doing rounds, the Party High Command has yet to contemplate , leave alone taking any decision for the choice of candidate or the pattern it would follow. With Valley based Congress leaders up in arms against both Prof Saif-u-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad for what they feel as their 'egos' having deprived them of 'legitimate' right and claim of the berth in Legislative Council during polls last year. While the leadership has yet to think over the matter, they are what can be seen as 'beseeching' Party president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mohan Prakash through a plethora of memoranda as also by way of using pressure from personal influential contacts to ensure 'justice' with Congress men in Kashmir. Sources said Valley based senior leaders have already started lobbying for this seat and the reason they are contending for seeking this is that Jammu is already overrepresented both in the ministry as well as in the Upper House. It is reliably learnt that some senior most leaders from Kashmir who are blaming Soz and Azad and the infighting factor for 'surrendering' seat to Jammu last time, whereas it actually was meant to be represented by candidate from Valley. On account of lack of consensus on the choice of candidate from Valley, the High command is learnt to disagreed on either of the choices which paved way for nominating a candidate from Jammu. The seat which remained in contention, is however a general seat but Valley based leaders are contenders on the argument that Jammu is 'heavily' represented in political posts. Pertinent to mention here is that PCC president had firmly put his foot down against one of the senior leaders from Kashmir and in protest Azad too had opposed the one supported by former from Valley. In the 'tussle' the High command eventually decided the seat to be given to a candidate from Jammu and in this due consideration was given that preference be given to the area which is un represented or under represented in Jammu region. Therefore, in the factors that were weighed politically, it was Udhampur and erstwhile Doda district for which late Yashpal Khajuria's name emerged as consensus candidate. In order to set right what Kashmir based leaders see as 'disparity' and ensure 'equal representation' lobbying by both the factions has already begun. While some leaders are strongly vouching for the similar pattern and criteria to be adopted as during last time when Khajuria's name was chosen ,Kashmir based leaders too have begun lobbying and the names in the reckoning include GR Monga, AG Vakil , Ashok Bhan and Shoiab Lone . It is being contemplated in quarters which matter in Delhi that the berth be given to senior, competent and politically deserving candidate. The name of veteran leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Pandit Mangat Ram Sharma doing rounds at present may not 'fructify' and would be seen in political quarters as a 'wrong decision' in view of his health condition as also comparative ability to remain active. At present there are three leaders from Kashmir in the Upper House who include Ali Mohammad from Ganderbal, Bashir Ahmad Magray from Pulwama and Mohammad Amin Bhat whose term is to expire in next two months. |
