| Jammu schools flooded with students lacking in infrastructure | | | EARLY TIMES report
Jammu, Feb 22: Government schools in Jammu district have been successful in enrolling a large number of students, but most of these schools are facing a shortage of teachers, infrastructure and many other allied problems as a result which is badly affecting there studies.
Of the total 52,000 posts vacant in the government education sector, 9,443 posts are vacant in the School Education Department. These posts comprise 2,459 gazetted,5,439 non-gazetted and 1,545 Class IV posts. The post of Chairman, in the J&K Board of School Education, has been vacant for the past so many months after the retirement of the earlier chairman. Various education revolving directors are needed for effective working of education in Jammu and this is yet to be fulfilled. Concerned Sources said, "Maximum number of primary, high and secondary schools of the district are facing the shortage of teachers regardless the count of good teachers are far away," they further added, "There are number of institutions which are running without proper guidance of school headmasters and headmistresses". On asking the education department J&K board they said, "The problem of vacancy of teachers in schools is now becoming a big problem but we are doing our best to curb the problem as soon as possible so that students do not face any kind of problem related to their studies". "Moreover we have in the past year appointed more than one hundred and fifty- five teachers for the upper senior wing and hundred and twenty-three for the middle or junior wing. We have even spend lakhs of rupees on the up gradation of schools facilities, infrastructure plus on their studies as well", hefurther added. A student Vasuneet Mahajan, of class tenth said, "Due to the shortage of teachers in our school, the existing staff areforced to take additional classes, knowing that those teachers are not very well versed in the other subjects than there own subjects". He further added, "As a result, not only our results show a down fall butthe school goodwill in the market also reduces". When contacted the teachers Prof. Shivani Gupta, geography teacher said, "My condition at the end of the day is so deterioration that I am not in a position to do my family work at home as I am married as well as working, the school has no system plus they do not even pay more for taking extra subjects". The statistics of the government document revels that of the total 7438 sanctioned posts of teachers in Jammu district, 2984 posts lies vacant. It has also been noted in addition that there were 1,11,531 students enrolled in the government schools in the district, but these schools did not have the requisite number of teachers.
"A total of 1,546 posts, including 1,039 of teacher, 146 of master, 42 of lecturer and 204 posts of various local schools, are lying vacant in the district," the education officials added. Though no enough tough action has been taken regarding this problem but still there is a small light of hope that this vacancy problem comes to an end and there is a holozoic view soon to be seen in the schools and education department of the Jammu district. |
