Sham chairs 5th Governing Body meeting of JKMPB | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 22: The Minister for Health, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma today asked the J&K Medicinal Plant Board (JKMPB) to priorities the promotion of medicinal plant cultivation in the potential areas of the state, with focus on involvement of locals . The Minister was speaking at the 5th Governing Body meeting of the Board attended by the officers from the line departments, including Directorate of Indian System of Medicine, Directorate of Family Welfare, Controller Drug and Food, Forests, Horticulture, Floriculture and Agriculture departments, besides scientists of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu. Reviewing the achievements of the Board, the Minister asked the authorities to focus on the ground work, particularly involvement of farmers in the cultivation of the medicinal plant as these have great market demand both at national and international level. He said that the state has varied climatic zones which are highly rich in flora and fauna, including plants and herbs having immense medicinal value. He said that if promoted properly on commercial basis, the cultivation of medicinal plants can provide employment to thousands of unemployed youth across the state. The Minister asked the concerned departments to dove-tail their schemes and work in close coordination to achieve the set targets. Seeking the status of various projects taken up by the departments under Board funding, the Minister asked the concerned officials to furnish the detailed report about the achievements of each department. He stressed the need for regular monitoring of the projects and said that the departments working on various medicinal plant cultivation projects should ensure that each penny was spent on the ground producing the desired results. He stressed the need for close monitoring of the promotional projects adding that focus shall be laid on developing big nurseries involving local people. He suggested for raising medicinal cultivation on dry land, barren land and snow bound areas for the optimum utilization of the land there. Highlighting the huge economic potential in the field, he asked the officers to give their best to promote the medicinal cultivation in the society adding that the field has huge potential of employment and a large chunk of population can be benefitted in the future. He said such fields need to be exploited to the full as these are both environment friendly and offer lucrative future for the young generations. Commissioner Secretary, Mr. Naveen Choudhary, Director, ISM Dr. Kabir were present in the meeting. |
