Centre has no intention to curtail powers of states: Farooq | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 22: A day after the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that central government has not discussed anything with the state regarding, National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah today said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister P Chidambaran have no intention of eroding the authority of states. "I do not feel that Chidambaran or Prime Minister have any such intention that they would curtail the powers of the State or eroda it", the National Conference Chief said. "The Prime Minister has also written to Chief Ministers of states-- they will soon hold a meeting--which will discuss the issue," Abdullah said. "Some time errors (Bhool) do take place, I do not think there was deliberate intention by the Centre to erode the authority of state," Abdullah said. "There is little bit error (bhool). Chief Ministers of the various states should have been called and talks should have been held with them." Abdullah, whose NC is a coalition partner of the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and NC-led coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, was replying to the questions on National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and whether it was a mistake by the UPA government. Regretting that moves are being made to curtail the powers of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Union Minister said that there should be no interference on the working of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the way its works to ensure continuation of Democracy in the country. "ECI is a statutory body and nothing should be done to curtail its powers. To ensure free and fair elections, they are the ones who manage an every important institution of elections", he said. On the probe initiated by the State Accountability Commission (SAC) against the Minister for Public Enterprise, Peerzada Muhammad Sayeed after surfacing of the examgate scandal, Abdullah said that law will take its course. "I am nobody to suggest anything, but decision on the fate of Peerzada has to be taken by Congress high command". |
