early times report
JAMMU, Feb 22: After two successive defeats in the hands of Jammu and Kashmir Police in major events decided in Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Bank today retained the Sher-i-Kashmir Gold Cup Football Trophy outplaying fighting cops 4-2 in tie-breaker at GGM Science College Jammu on Wednesday. In two major events of State League and Greater Kashmir Cup, J&K Bank lost to the same side of J&K Police but today clinched the thriller even as they failed to convert a penalty kick awarded in their favour in the 80th minute.A miss on penalty kick was not the first sure goal opportunity thrown away by the J&K Bank, but they missed as many as three chances during the 90-minute tense play. However, the offensive play from both the sides throughout the game fully entertained the jam-packed crowd. As usual, the game was stopped for a couple of minutes after J&K Police objected to a penalty kick awarded to the opponents by center referee, Rajiv Dev. But, the situation was controlled by the organizing committee members led by Surinder Singh Bunty and the game resumed with Police goal-keeper defending the penalty kick to the dejection of J&K Bank.Interestingly, J&K Bank which remained unlucky in converting the moves into goals in the stipulated time, were fortunate enough in the tie-breakers when two of the Police boys kicked the ball out of the target.Ramesh Verma and Manmohan Singh could not kick the ball right into the net while skipper, Ajay and Riaz were successful in their attempts. However, from J&K Bank, Rohit's kick was well defended by goal-keeper, while Bilal, Khalid, Adil Qadir and Rizwan did not mistake in netting the ball.In the final and prize distribution function, Minister for Rural Development, Ali Mohd Sagar was chief guest, who gave away winners and runners-up trophies as also other individual prizes. He also presented a cheque of Rs 31,000 to winners, J&K Bank and Rs 21,000 to J&K Police as prize money awarded by the organizers, J&K Youth National Conference.Among others present were Political Advisor to Chief Minister, Devinder Singh Rana, Additional Director General of J&K Police (ADGP), Armed and Law and Order, K Rajendra Kumar and Chairman of the J&K Bank Ltd. Cash incentive for Bank team Soon after the J&K Bank emerged winner, chairman of the Bank, who witnessed the final, announced a cash prize of Rs 21,000 for each member of the team.
