| Power rates all set to climb as Jora introduces Bill in LA | | | Jammu, January 19- Minister for Power Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora today introduced J&K State Electricity Regulatory Commission (Amendment) Bill, LA Bill No. 4 of 2007. The Bill seeks deletion of sub section (3) of the section 17 of the Act and also in sub section (5), deletion of words "Subject to the provisions of section (3)". The objects and reasons of the Bill state that the current provision of sub-section (3) of section 17 of J&K State Electricity Regulatory Commission Act, 2000 requires that no consumer or class of consumers shall be charged less than fifty percent of the average cost of supply of energy. The current average tariff is only 28% of the cost of supply of energy. Since the sudden enhancement of tariff to a level of 50% of the average cost of supply would result in public out cry, the government proposes to increase the tariff gradually. In order to enable the J&K State Electricity Regulatory Commission to entertain the tariff petitions providing for gradual and incremental increase in tariff, the present provision of sub-section (3) of section 17 of J&K State Electricity Regulatory Commission Act, 2000 need to be deleted. Consequent upon this, minor changes also need to be effected in sub-section (5) of section 17 of the Act.
