More big fish to come under SAC scanner | Anti graft drive | | Early Times Report srinagar, Feb 23: The State Accountability Commission (SAC) seems determined to carry forward its anti-graft drive. After putting Chief Minister and some senior ministers on notice, the SAC is likely put many `big fish' under radar in the coming days. The anti-graft body is expected to open cases of ministers of former regime as well. According to highly placed sources, the SAC may strive for getting stay orders vacated on more than 22 cases of graft involving former/current ministers and bureaucrats. The Sources said that probe against more than 20 cases involving some top former and current ministers and politicians was hampered due to stay orders issued by the High Court. "However, efforts were on to get the stay vacated so that the old cases pending in the commission for probe could be taken up," sources added. SAC sources hinted at more notices against ministers and politicians in the coming days. Notices have already been served to Chief Minister, Education Minister Peerzada Muhammad Sayed and Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather for their alleged involvement in corruption. The SAC came to limelight when it put Chief Minister on notice for appointing his advisors and heads of various boards. Omar, however, down played the development and claimed credit for what he called `respect for independent functioning' of various institutions in the state. Sources in the SAC, however, contest Omar's claims. According to them, attempts to curb SAC freedom have been repeatedly made. An amendment has been brought in section 32 of the Act by virtue of which all the corruption cases against bureaucrats and government officers/ officials have been transferred to state vigilance commission. Pertinently the SAC has been accused of shielding erring officials. Probe initiated by its in more then 50 cases bore no fruit. The Commission itself was reduced only to papers after its former chairman Justice (R) Sethi died of cardiac arrest in 2007-08. "The anti graft Commission was rendered toothless after justice Sethi's death because all the big fishes in Azad government had the apprehension of being caught up for their misdeeds," claimed a top politicians wishing anonymity. Meanwhile, Secretary of the Commission, Anita Koul confirmed to a local news agency that notice was issued to Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather. She said that on the basis of complaints SAC serves the notice and a proper investigation is being undertaken. Koul said that if a person is proven guilty, the SAC recommends action. However, she agreed that the SAC did not have the jurisdiction of taking action at its own. "As per the section 4 of the SAC Act, Commission can recommend action to an appropriate authority," Koul said, adding that SAC had approached the Court to get the stay on earlier cases pending with the Commission vacated. |
