19 soldiers dead, 3 still trapped in Avalanche in valley | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 23: The death toll in twin avalanches in Jammu and Kashmir went up to 19 by Thursday afternoon, with all the casualties being army personnel, the army said. Three soldiers are still missing. At least 16 army personnel were killed in Dawar in Bandipora district. Another three were killed in the avalanche in Sonamarg area of Ganderbal district, army officials said. Both the areas are in north Kashmir. "We have recovered nine bodies in Dawar while seven soldiers are still feared to be under the debris," according to Lieutenant Colonel JS Brar, spokesman of the army's Srinagar-based 15th Corps. "Earlier today, 13 soldiers were rescued from the avalanche debris in Dawar village of Gurez sub-division where an overnight avalanche struck the brigade headquarters. Dawar is in Gurez subdivision, 109 km Srinagar. "Three soldiers of the territorial army, including a junior commissioned officer, were killed in another overnight avalanche in Sonamarg area of Ganderbal," Col Brar added. It is to mention that over a dozen hutments were also swept away in another avalanche in Ramwari area of Ganderbal district late night on Feb 22. Meanwhile reports added that nine personnel were rescued while one Junior Commissioned Officer, three jawans and two civil porters were injured. The deceased have been identified as Naib Subedar Mahadev Gain, Sepoy Puvaneswaran M (both of Army Service Corps) and Rifleman Amit Sharma of Territorial Army', Lt Col JS Brar, Srinagar based Defence Spokesman said. The personnel who lost their lives have been identified as Subedar Desh Raj, Naib Subedar RS Poonia, Naib Subedar SN Yadav, Naib Subedar UB Hirve, Havaldar Om Prakash Baitha, Sepoy Vinay Kumar Bharati, Craftsman Ankit Kumar, Craftsman S Muni Samy, Sepoy Dinesh Kumar, Sepoy Sagar Biswas, Sepoy Probir Sarkar, Craftsman Shyju JP and Craftsman Nawle Manoj. 'It is a major tragedy. Rescue operations are being hindered by heavy snow and bad weather conditions. The other three jawans were at a sentry post which is under 18 feet of snow. A specialized team from High Altitude Warfare School alongwith two avalanche rescue dogs has reached the spot,' he went on the say. |
