Defence Ministry for anti-avalanches measures | | | EARLY TIMES report Jammu, Feb 23: The Defence Ministry is said to have suggested to the Army top brass to devise ways and means for preventing death of the Army personnel in avalanches in Jammu and Kashmir. T he suggestion has coin the wake of demise of 21 Army officials in the avalanches near Sonamarg and at Gurez during the last 24 hours. Though the valley and its hilly areas registered heavy snowfall during the current winter season five to seven deaths of Army personnel take place every year as a result of avalanches and shooting stones. Reports said that the Defence Ministry officials want the Army engineers and other experts to devise ways so that Army units and camps could be established at spots where the problems of avalanches were minimum. The Ministry officials also expect experts and Army engineers to set up units after the area or the spot was sanitized against avalanches. While expressing grief over the demise of 21 Army personnel the Defence Minister, A.K.Antony, said that the Government will take in hand all possible relief and rehabilitation measures. He said that those injured would be provided all medical and other aid. Reports said that the Ministry may constitute a team of experts for evolving a mechanism for ensuring safety for Army personnel against weather related odds. Since the Army personnel were to be deployed in difficult, farflung and hilly areas safety measures were needed to be toned up. |
