Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 24: Continuing discrimination with Jammu region, National Conference-Congress coalition government is yet to bring several posh areas under Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC).
This is despite the fact that these well-developed areas are at 10 to 20 minutes drive from Deputy Commissioner's office located at Wazarat road. These include Bhathindi, Upper Bhathindi, Sunjawan, Chowadi, Narwal Bala, Gujjar Colony, Chata, Jeewan Nagar, Deeli and New Deeli. Inhabited by elite class of Jammu and Kashmir, these areas are yet to become part of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC).
These areas are rated as posh colonies of Jammu with round the clock water and power supply facilities. Housing and Urban development department for the reasons better known to it has failed to bring these under the ambit of JMC. On being asked, Commissioner/Secretary Suresh Kumar said "Proposal was moved for bringing these areas under JMC but that got stuck. These would be brought under JMC but after the municipal elections are over."
However, most of these areas are part of Jammu Development Authority (JDA), added Suresh Kumar. In comparison to this, all areas adjoining Srinagar city are part of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC). Officials do accept that process of notifying an areas as part of Municipal Corporation has been much better in Kashmir than in Jammu. They shared that not much interest has been shown in giving legal sanction to areas to become part of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC).
"Government is by design not allowing these areas to become part of JMC. Land grabbers are earning profit worth crores of rupees from these areas. They do not want these to be brought under JMC," said an official of JMC. He added that expanding Jammu city should have around 80 to 85 wards but it has not 71. "Political bosses are to be blamed for this mess," commented another official.
He stressed that Bhathindi, Upper Bhathindi, Sunjawan, Chowadi, Narwal Bala, Gujjar Colony, Chata, Jeewan Nagar, Deeli and New Deeli all deserve to be made part of JMC. "These areas have connectivity better than many other parts of JMC. Road connectivity, electricity and water supply have all improved in these areas. Only political incapacity is disallowing notification of these as part of JMC," commented the official.
Besides this, government recently created 16 new municipal committees taking total number of the municipalities from 76 to 92. Out of these 16, 12 went to Kashmir region and just four to Jammu region. 12 new Municipal Committees announced for the Kashmir valley included Langet in Kupwara district (13 Wards), Watergam in Baramulla district (13 Wards), Chadoora in Budgam (13 Wards), Devsar, Yaripora, Mehmoodpora, Trisal and Quimoh in Kulgam district (13 Wards), Ashmuji in Kulgam district (7 Wards), Aishmuqam, Shangus and Seer Hamdan in Anantnag district (13 Wards).
Four new Municipal Committees approved for Jammu region were Thathri in Doda district (7 Wards), Kalakote in Rajouri district (7 Wards), Surankote in Poonch district (13 Wards) and Purana Daroor in Reasi district (7 Wards). Through another SRO, the government increased Wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation from 65 to 75. However, the wards of Jammu Municipal Corporation would remain unchanged at 71.
However, government did announce recently that constitution of municipal committees Nagrota, Miransahib, Chak Malal, Gigriyal, Palanwala, Pargwal, Gajansoo in Jammu district is under process for which final decision would be taken after Municipal elections. Similarly, for Reasi, constitution of municipal committees for Dharmari, Arnas, Mahore, Runsoo is under process. For Samba, constitution of municipal committees for Ghagwal, Rajpora, Gurahslathian is under process. For Kathua, constitution of municipal committees for Ramkote, Bani and Badhoo is under process.
