PDP walks out of House over corruption
2/24/2012 11:34:00 PM
Bashir Assad
JAMMU, Feb 24: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today staged walkout from the Legislative Assembly after Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone disallowed the adjournment motion moved by the party to discuss rampant corruption in the State.
As soon as the Speaker announced commencement of Question Hour, PDP MLAs stood up from their seats seeking adjournment of the question hour for discussion on the issue of corruption which was, however, turned down by the Speaker urging them to raise the issue once question hour concludes.
PDP legislators, however, insisted on adjournment of the house citing seriousness of the matter as reason for adjournment. Ab. Rehman Veeri, Abdul Gafar Sofi, Sayed Bashir Ahmad, Javed Mustafa Mir, Muhammad Khalil Band, Rafi Ahmad Mir, Mushtaq Ahmad Shah, Zahoor Ahmad Mir, Nizamudin Bhat, Basharat Bukhari, Dr. Shafiq Ahmad and Abdul Haq Khan assembled at the front row while shouting slogans against the government.
The Law Minister Ali Muhammad Sagar on many occasions shouted at the opposition PDP accusing them of backtracking from the commitment of cooperating in smooth functioning of the House.
Responding to PDP sloganeering, the Speaker said he had requested Mehbooba Mufti to cooperate in running the house smoothly. "Huge public money is invested on running of business in the House, you should cooperate. You are free to discuss any issue to pinpoint wrongs, if any committed by the government and discuss the same after question hour, but you are violating the rules, it is our joint responsibility to run this house smoothly", said the Speaker.
The PDP had sought adjournment of the normal business of the Assembly so as to discuss corruption. Pertinently the Chief Minister and many ministers have been asked by Accountability Commission to explain their conduct in the face of various charges of misuse of authority for personal and party gains. The PDP expressed dismay over Speaker's reluctance to allow the motion. "It is unfortunate that mandatory notice under rules was sent to the concerned on Thursday, but the party was not allowed to discuss this issue of public importance in the House", a spokesman of PDP said.
The spokesman said that the recent developments have further dented the image of the Government as people are openly questioning its moral, legal and constitutional authority to function with tainted tools.
The party further felt that assembly will be failing in its duty if the issue of notices on corruption and misuse of authority is not taken on board and people are not kept posted with actual details.

`Couple of minutes please'
Minutes after PDP patron Mufti Muhammad Sayed entered the house, PDP MLAs marched towards the well of the house shouting anti-government slogans. Nizamidin Bhat tried to make his point asking Speaker to listen to him for a couple of minutes. However, the Speaker remained unmoved. On this Bhat shouted saying that when Parliament can adjourn the routine business to discuss the issues of urgent nature, why not in assembly.
Yusuf kay Qatil
While Nizam-ud-Din was trying to attract Speaker's attention, one of the PDP MLAs shouted Sayed Yusuf Shah ke qatil ko pesh karo (Produce the murderer of Sayed Yusuf NC activist).
Ali Baba jawab do
Nawang Rigzin Jora on behalf of the power minister, started to read the written reply to Professor Chaman Lal Gupta's QD but opposition PDP shouted slogans loudly "PDP ka ek sawal, paisa khaghaya koun sa lal" (PDP raises one question, which babu to the money). Corrupt sarkar hai hai, loot ka hisab do, Ali Baba Jawab do, logoon ke paisa ka hisab do hisab do.
