Inter-college symposium held on environment | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 25: An inter college symposium was organized by the Environment Unit of MIER College of Education under the Project NEAC (National Environment Awareness Campaign 2011-12) in collaboration with Ministry of Environment & Forests. The theme of the symposium was 'Challenges of Sustaining Forests in an Ever-changing Ecosystem'. C.M Seth, chairperson, WWF was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Parvinder Kumar, Assistant Professor Dept. of Zoology University of Jammu, Dr.Parvez Slathia, Asst. Prof. School of Biotechnology SMVDU, Katra and Dr.P.L. Kaul, OSD MIER were the jury members. In his welcome address, Adit Gupta, Joint Director, MIER hailed the achievements of Dr. Seth who is an eminent academician, scientist and able administrator. He further acquainted the audience about his contributions in the field of environment which won him various national and international awards. A warm welcome was also extended to the honorable jury members who also happen to be renowned persons from the field of sciences. Gupta hoped that the deliberations would be fruitful and meaningful for the teacher trainees. 10 participants from various colleges of education across Jammu city participated in this symposium. The students presented their views on the theme. On the basis of the results given by jury members, Shipla Gupta from M.C. Khalsa College of Education clinched the 1st prize, Anjali Sharma representing MIER College of Education won the 2nd prize and Anita Kumari of NSM College of Education stood 3rd. Certificates were also distributed to the participants. Renu Gupta felicitated the Chief Guest and thanked him for gracing the occasion. She also congratulated the Environment Unit for taking the initiative of organizing such programmes. She said that this a clarion call for all of us to wake up and pledge to conserve the forests. Chief Guest, in his address highlighted the objective of the symposium which is to spread the message of sustainability. He illustrated his view point through the example of Ladakh region where the local culture and traditions have contributed to the sustainability of the region. He emphasized that the rural population is closer to the nature and hence more affected by it. Furthermore our cultures and traditions like sacred ponds and devsthans were the ways devised by our ancestors to conserve forests. He stressed that in 1975 our world crossed its carrying capacity and any increase in the population means extra load on the earth. Now it is up to us which way we would like to take the present scenario. An inspirational song on environment was presented on the occasion by the students of the college which was highly appreciated by the guests. Mementoes were also presented to the honourable guests. Monika Bajaj, Incharge, Environment Education Unit presented the formal vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Sanjana Bhat, a B.Ed student. |
