| Plantation drive under MGNERAGA proving to be farce only: MLA Doda | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 25: Showing dissatisfaction over swindling of funds meant for plantation in Doda district every year, MLA Doda Abdul Majid Wani has demanded that these funds should be, instead, utilised for land levelling and protection works so as to check the land erosion and landslides effectively. Most of the funds allocated for plantation under MGNREGA, DPAP, Haryali, Soil Conservation, DRDA and horticulture sector are siphoned off by nexus of corrupt officials and contractors. Generally sub standard plants that too, in lesser quantity, are procured from fake & non-existing contractors from outside the district and shown planted every year. In reality only between 30-50% fruit tree plants that too of inferior quality are sown, whereas full payment is drawn every year and distributed among contractors and the officials. Majid Wani further said that in order to stop this practice, it was decided in various meetings that only high quality fruit tree plants shall be purchased from genuine local nurseries only. This too should have been followed by conduct of Social Audit. This could have enhanced transparency and accountability. But the officials of Rural Development, Horticulture and other departments are bent upon creating confusion, this year also, just to loot the government ex-chequer. Instead of pondering upon the total amount spent for plantation of fruit tree plants under different schemes/ departments during last one decade and too little results achieved; the officials once again are indulging in purchase of inferior quality fruit tree plants from fake, non-existing and contractors from outside the district. Demanding conduct of enquiry against such corrupt government officials, MLA Doda made an appeal to the Chief Minister and the concerned ministers to immediately issue orders for utilisation of funds, meant for plantation under MGNREGA, DPAP, Haryali, Soil Conservation, DRDA and horticulture sector, for land levelling, protection works and restoration of damages caused to nullahs and internal links due to heavy rainfall and landslides in hilly areas. |
