'Fire safety devices to be made mandatory ion private nursing homes'

JAMMU, Feb 25 : While the state Government has drawn schemes for upgrading the heating system in hospitals at district levels, including those in far-flung areas of Gurez, Bandipora and Kupwara , in Jammu and Kashmir no plan has been formulated for providing fire safety system not only in district level hospitals but even in two medical colleges and major hospitals in the state's winter and summer capitals. Official sources said that proper tenders were being floated for invited reputed companies for installing and upgrading the heating system. Under the system hospitals wards, operation theatres and other room were being provided with heating system so that besides patients and their attendants, the doctors and the paramedical staff were comfortable during winter months.
Experts have suggested to the Government to issue inst ructions to the owners of private nursing homes and hospitals to install air conditioners for the benefit of the patients. These experts said that all major nursing homes and hospitals, run in private sector, had neither the fighting facilities nor the air conditioners causing great inconvenience to the patients and their attendants. Number of NGOs have expressed cover the delay on the part of the state Government in installing fire safety devices in hospitals including the two medical colleges. They have also urged the Government to prevail upon t he owners of private nursing homes and hospitals to install fire safety devices they have suggested to the Government that installing fire safety devices and air conditioners in all private and public sector hospitals and nursing homes be made mandatory and license of those private hospitals and nursing homes cancelled which do not have fire safety devices and air conditioners. The NGOs have also urged the Government to increase the bed capacity in the two medical colleges; major hospitals in the twin capitals of the state so that indoor patients did not suffer. They said as a result of big gap between the demand for beds and the availability patients requiring immediate surgeries are sent to private nursing homes.
