| Ruling, opposition MLAs hand in glove: Sajjad Lone | | | early times report
Srinagar, Feb 25 : Peoples Conference Chairman, Sajjad Lone, Saturday said that MLAs of ruling and opposition parties are hand in glove to demolish the institution of Panchyat.
, Lone said, "The role of an MLA was to legislate. In the absence of Panchayats and last 20 years of turmoil these people have got their role and started acting as a glorified Sarpanch. As new monarchs in the villages they would decide who will get IAY, Aanganwari and small contractors."
"All of the sudden the real sarpanchs are down and they are so unsure of their talent to legislate that they don't want to give away that charge of that glorified sarpanch. It is so difficult because Sarpanch has its system of checks and balances. There is a group of sarpanchs around and also it is different from village to village. So you don't have one monarch in 20 to 60 villages," he added. The PC chairman said a committee has been formed in which there are PDP and NC members. "It has been formed basically to come together and take away all the powers from panchyats. They should understand that institution of panchayats as on date is more representative than the institution of assembly," he asserted.Lone urged the Chief Minister not to fall into this 'trap.' |
