Will the NC-Cong govt withstand the opposition onslaught ? | Budget Session | | Rustam JAMMU, Feb 25: As expected, the opposition parties have upped their ante and launched a blistering attack on the NC-Congress coalition government. If what the opposition parties did in and outside the legislature on the first two days of the budget session is any indication, then it can be said without any hesitation that the government is destined to face heat throughout the session. The main opposition PDP cornered the government on both days and leveled serious charges of corruption, nepotism and highhandedness. It created troubles for the government in both the Houses. In the Lower House, the ruling parties utterly failed to counter the PDP attack on those allegedly involved in corruption and scams. In the Upper House, the Chairman ordered the Marshals to evict the PDP MLCs from the House. They, like the party MLAs in the Lower House, leveled serious corruption charges against the ruling coalition, particularly ministers, and questioned the rationale behind giving status of minister to political advisors and chairpersons of various boards. The PDP made it loud and clear that it would not allow what it called the most corrupt government to function in the state. If the PDP cornered the ruling coalition on such issues as corruption, including political corruption, the BJP tore into the state government in general and the Jammu-based Congress ministers in particular saying they have been making invidious and humiliating distinctions between Kashmir and Jammu while allotting funds or while creating new municipalities and new wards. They, like the PDP legislators, also staged a walk out to register their most emphatic protest against the discriminatory policies of the government. More importantly, the BJP also exposed the sham secularism the NC and the Congress have been practicing in the state. The role of the lone JSM MLA Ashwini Sharma was no different. He gave his unstinted support to the BJP legislators and accused the government of adopting a step-motherly approach towards Jammu province. The Panthers Party (NPP) also did not leave anyone in any doubt that it would expose the ruling coalition in and outside the legislature. It attacked the government on both days from right and left and dubbed it as discriminatory and anti-Jammu. Outside the legislature, the NPP organised an impressive assembly gherao programme which culminated in a confrontation between the Panthers, including their chief Bhim Singh, and arrest of nearly 200 Panthers. |
