Verbal duel in LA:
2/26/2012 12:07:56 AM
Bashir Assad
Jammu, Feb 25: The Assembly today witnessed a verbal duel between the Speaker and former Fianance Minister, Muzaffar Husain Beig. Both used unparliamentarily language as the House watched the duo . "Mr Beig get out of the House. Yeh aap kay baap ka house nahi hai (This is not your father's House). Mera Karza abhi bhi aap par hai (You still owe me a lot). I know you very well", the Speaker shouted, Beig had shouted that he was taking his party's allotted time, Kisi kay baap ka nahin.
Earlier, while initiating discussion on adjournment motion moved by his party on corruption, Beig lashed out at Finance Minister saying that despite knowing that code of procedure was violated by the IT department while allotting work for preparation of Smart Cards for Secretariat employees to J&K Bank, why he did not inform the cabinet or Chief Minister when memo was prepared.
"Mr Finance Minister why didn't you brief the cabinet or the Chief Minister that codal procedure was violated while allotting the work to J&K Bank? Beig asked. When Baig repeated that why Finance Minister did not inform the cabinet that his son was among the beneficiaries, Speaker Muhammad Akbar Lone intervened by saying that his son was not involved anywhere in this issue.
Beig urged the Speaker not to become party to the dispute as he (Speaker) was presiding the house. Soon Finance Minister A R Rather turned furious and shouted at Beig that he was tendering apology after every allegation. On this Beig cut short his speech and announced that he was staging walk out from the house in protest against Speaker's `partiality'. The Speaker's response triggered the verbal dual.
Latter talking to media persons outside the house, Beig said the Speaker argued on behalf of the government. "He became a party to the dispute. I have taken time of my party."
Beig ruled out boycott of rest of the business of the House. "We cannot harm the cause of our constituencies." He said.
He urged Omar to take away the portfolio from Rather on the analogy of sacking congress ministers in the coalition government.
