Baig darts 'political arrows' on allies in govt over corruption | Contests 'different' parameters with ministers involved Cites 'ET' stories reflecting corruption, irregularities | | Saroj Razdan Jammu, Feb 25: In what could be seen as cornering the coalition government with 'political arrows' over the issue of corruption Senior PDP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baigh used his oratory abilities in making accusations which 'provoked' the ruling NC and its leadership to counter accuse him of having 'intent' to create 'wedges' between the alliance partners. Taking a dig, Baigh accused Chief Minister Abdullah of having adopted different yardsticks in tackling the cases of corruption against three ministers, two of them belonging to Congress and one to NC, contending it only reflected bias of protecting the minister of his own party. Baigh hit out directly at the Omar led government that despite so many cases having come to fore, both CM as well as the ministers for fear of losing 'power and chair' did not show moral courage to step down. After creating uproar for two consecutive days, in the debate that finally took off was initiated by Muzaffar Hussain Baigh in the afternoon session which culminated on an 'unsavoury' note on account of the verbal brawl between Speaker and the PDP leader. However, in his typical oratory style woven and corroborated with instances to substantiate the allegations and remarks, Baigh started off from general version of politicians and their image having been maligned due to ever growing menace of corruption. "Corruption is not new nor can be any politician or a party be singularly blamed for it……..Is Hamam Main Sab Nange Hai…….Main Agahar IDhar Sey Do Batey Kahunga Aap Udhar Sey Char Sunayange…", Baigh said contending however that present coalition government had only allowed itself to function in a way which not only led corruption to get 'institutionalized' but had also affected its credibility and image badly. "it is the perception in public that matters….howsoever you may attempt to prove innocent or not having any involvement the cases that have surfaced over a period of time have reinforced the belief in the minds of people that government is knee deep in corruption. Corruption which had become completely institutionalized needed structural reforms if we have to check it, he added. The PDP leader also cited some instances written in his note pad and made repeated mention of the stories published in Early Times News Paper besides a Kashmir based English daily which had exposed irregularities committed on various fronts including some schemes and the social audit reports which he alleged smacked even more foul of NC resorting to 'unfair' tactics of presenting one sided pictures at district levels in order to serve their own interests. Even as he sounded soft towards Congress, which in a lighter vein he acceded too, saying it was apparent on his part to be bitter towards NC, Muzaffar Baigh took a dig first at PHE minister Taj Mohi U- Din contending that it was he who had confided publicly of having 'greased' the palms of other ministry in getting one NHPC file released . Making an observation about the allegations made against Taj, Baigh sarcastically said he has been 'regretting' these having come to fore no matter by design, which have only ruined the chances of his becoming Deputy Chief Minister. " Do not now accept this offer even if they give it you…..", Baigh said with satire, albeit loaded with 'provocation'. Continuing his tirade of accusations of government having failed to tackle and curb the corruption, Baigh questioned as to why two yardsticks were adopted in first sacking GM Saroori and Peerzada Mohammad Syed lately whereas the cases were of similar nature. Targetting Finance Minister AR Rather by showering a volley of accusations against him in Smart card issue, he on one hand blamed rather of having misled the cabinet, having not informed Chief Minister when he came to know of irregularity of codal formalities not having been completed, on the other hand he unleashed one more political arrow of accusing Chief Minister of remaining silent and not asking him to step down the way he did with two Congress ministers, on moral grounds. Asserting corruption can never be proved without corroborative evidence, yet on the basis of prima facie details and allegations, ministers could not escape for acts of omission and commission, citing what had happened at the national level with cases of A Raja and Suresh Kalmadi. The PDP leader, who is also a legal luminary said that even though it is fact 'big fish' never get caught, still neither Chief Minister nor his ministers can try to 'exonerate' themselves by feigning ignorance or laying blame on the officers. "IT is ultimately on ministers blame comes in any Parlimanetary system", Baigh said. |
