| Six children killed as bus falls in canal | | | Sonepat (Haryana), Aug 1: Six children, including three girls, were killed and three persons were injured when a school bus fell into a canal near here today.
The bus carrying 28 children from Satkumba Vidya Mandir school in Kheri Gujjar village fell into the Western Yamuna Canal, about 20 km from here, when its driver tried to avert a collision with a mule cart that came in front of it as it was crossing a bridge, an official spokesman said.
The dead children, all aged between five and 15, belonged to Bali Qutabpur and other nearby villages and were on their way to school, he said.
The spokesman identified the dead as Ankush (6) and Priyanka (8), both children of one Nahar Singh, Monica (5), Manisha (15), Vishal (10) and Jatinder (12).
Police had earlier put the number of dead at seven. Earlier reports had suggested that some children were missing after the accident, but the spokesman said all of them had been rescued.
The three injured -- Nahar Singh's third child, 14-year-old Preeti, another student Amarjit (14) and bus driver Sanjay Kumar, who had earlier been declared as absconding -- were admitted to a private hospital at Ganaur.
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has ordered an inquiry into the accident. Compensation of Rs two lakh will be paid to the family of each dead student and free medical aid will be provided to those admitted to hospital, officials said. |
