| Two LeT militants killed at Kishtwar | | | Asif Iqbal Naik
KISHTWAR, Feb 26: Two LeT militants were today killed by security forces in an encounter at Bonzwar, about 8 km from here.
Acting on a tip off about the presence of militants at Bonzwar, a joint column of police, 17 RR and 74 Bn of CRPF launched a massive search operation in the wee hours of Sunday in Bonzwar area.
SP, Kishtwar, Bhim Sen Tutti said that after developing specific information about two militants in a natural cave on the bank of river Chenab, cops cordoned it off and asked them to surrender. But they refused to surrender and opened fire.
The forces retaliated and in the encounter which continued for one hour, both the militants were killed, he added.
The killed militants were identified as Shanawaz Ahmed Khandey alias Bilal Ahmed, son of Ghulam Mohammad Khanday of Suzna Palmar, and Mohammad Rafi, son of Abdul Rashid Mochi of Gorash Sarthal. With their killing, LeT was said to have been wiped out from the district.
One AK rifle, its two magazines, 56 rounds, one pistol (said to be used in the killing of SPO Mohammad Hanief), kerosene oil, blankets, quilt, 5 kg rice, 2 kg mustard oil, a mobile phone and two SIM cards were recovered from them.
Sources said the forces also recovered SPO Hanief's identity card and identity cards of the killed militants which carried the "fake" signatures of the officials of an intelligence agency.
Both the militants were involved in killing of SPO Hanief of Drubri, Thathri, on January 8 this year. Their accomplices Nafees Munwar, son of Mohammad Munwar Ahanger of Suzana Palmar, and Basharat Ali, son of Mohammad Farooq Bakerwal of Hiranagar, Kathua, had already been arrested and lodged in jail.
As per a police statement, Bilal was a recycled militant. He was earlier active between 2002 to 2006 . In 2005, he had killed two SOG personnel in an encounter in Dool area of Kishtwar. In 2006, he was arrested at Shopian and lodged in jail.
Rafi was a SPO. In 2005, he had killed selection grade cop Javed Ahmed at Qaara, Gandoh, and fled with his service weapon to join militant ranks. However, after six months, he was arrested in a murder case and lodged in jail. He was bailed out in 2010.
After his release, he along with Bilal hatched a conspiracy and killed SPO Hanief in Palmar area. Nafees Munwar and Basharat Ali were also with them.
