LC seat becoming 'table battle' between Cong factions | | | ET Report JAMMU, Feb 26: With smooth process that paved way for formal appointment of Amrit Malhotra as Chairman of the Legislative Council, the Congress is now faced with challenge of election of lone seat in the Upper House that has fallen vacant due to demise of Yashhpal Khajuria. The process, for which the notification is being issued on March 6, is far from being smooth at the level of 'selecting' the party nominee as the seat appears to have become 'table battle' for the two factions and the leaders who 'steer' this factionalism. Sources said with Amrit Malhotra's 'elevation' as Chairaman of the Upper House, it has become a prestige point for the faction led by Ghulam Nabi Azad to have the nominee from their camp as choice of the party candidate for this seat, Malhotra being seen as a leader from Prof Soz camp. Sources say Azad is personally trying to push the name of former minister Jugal Kishore for LC berth and for getting this through he is playing the Udhampur card, the earlier election and selection of nominee having been done on the basis of 'representation factor' to Udhampur -Reasi in the Upper House, an area which was seen as unrepresented. On the contrary the other faction too has been trying to push its choice before quarters in Delhi who have to take final decision, sources said adding that ever since the name of veteran leader Mangat Ram has come in circulation as their probable candidate, unrest has started in Udhampur Congress cadres and workers, irrespective of their affiliations to either faction. Sources say a flurry of memoranda have been dashed to New Delhi from different levels within the hierarchy of the organization, clamouring and canvassing for 'retaining' the berth for the region, a pattern that was followed during last time. Even as the party sentiment on Udhampur representation, the bone of contention is more to be on the choice of candidate , a step which appears to have been 'overtaken' by war of nerves between the two factions and the leaders. Though Azad is believed to be strongly lobbying for Jugal's name as final choice , there is one more contention by some leaders from within the camp asking for Udhampur representation that Jugal Kishore doesn't actually belong to Udhampur and therefore even if party decision were to be in favour of this representation, the High Command must give chance to someone from the district , which is politically suffering due to factionalism besides Panthers Party domination getting stronger and louder at all levels. Some senior leaders contending this say that Udhampur which once used to be stronghold of Congress is fast losing that political grip and if Congress High command, 10 Janpath in particular doesn't take it as a wake up call, the scene would further ruin and disappoint the cadres in the district and adjacent areas. |
