Ashu, Kavaljeet steal show as NCC lifts trophy

JAMMU, Feb 26: The splendid show by unsung cricketer Ashu and old horse Kavaljeet Singh helped National Cricket Club (NCC) to script a thrilling 3-run win over equally balanced side of Jammu Cricket Club (JCC) in the finals and lifted the coveted trophy of Jammu Premier League T20 Tawi Cup, which concluded at MA Stadium, here today. The tournament was organized by Armed Forces under Operation Sadbhavna in collaboration with the Department of Youth Services and Sports, J&K State Sports Council and Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association. Director Youth Services and Sports, J&K S Jaipal Singh was the chief guest on the valedictory function, while Deputy Commander 36 Brigade, A Madan was the guest of honour, both of whom later-on distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up teams. Earlier, in the summit clash, NCC after winning the toss and batting first, rode on a superb display of batting by opener Ashu and skipper Kavaljeet Singh scored a good total of 142 runs in the stipulated 20 overs by losing 8 wickets. Ashu, who is an unsung cricketer, despite scoring bulk of runs and taking good haul of wickets consistently, played a fabulous innings of 68 runs, hitting all the shots with fluid grace, while, Kavaljeet, on the other hand, led from the front and served inspiration for the youngsters in his gutsy knock of 35 runs, when NCC needed runs badly after their in form opener Manish Dogra's first ball dismissal. After Dogra was dismissed on the very first ball bowled by speedster Rahil Singh, the Ashu-Kavaljeet duo put on a partnership of 82 runs to help their side set a good target. Puneet Kumar also contributed quick-fire 21 runs to the total. For JCC, Jagtar Singh was pick of the bowlers, who took 2 wickets for 33 runs in his 4 overs, while Rahil Singh and Paras Sharma claimed one wicket each.
JCC, in reply gave a tough fight, courtesy-superb innings by former first class cricketer Vivek Singh, who sent the NCC bowlers on a leather-hunt in his knock of 43 runs including 6 delectable boundaries. Ranjeev also scored power-packed 28 runs to the total. However, the fall of wickets at regular intervals increased the required run rate and put pressure on the batsmen, finally the team fell just short of 3 runs to lose the match by the same margin. Kavaljeet Singh, was wrecker-in-chief for NCC, taking 3 important wickets in his four overs by conceding 23 runs. For his all-round show, he was adjudged man of the match, while the man of the series award was jointly bagged by Ashu of NCC and Paras Sharma of JCC. Meanwhile, in the match for third place, Simula Cricket Club defeated Diamond Cricket Club in a tough contest. Batting first, Simula Club scored 129 runs in the stipulated 20 overs, with Dhruv Mahajan scoring handsome 46 runs in 39 balls and Anshuman Sharma 36 runs in 43 balls. Parmeet took 3 wickets for Diamond Club, while Pawandeep and Narinder captured 2 wickets each. Diamond Club failed to chase the target and lost the match to help Simula Club to qualify for the main phase of the tournament to be held later-on. Gurmeet Singh was the top scorer with 26 runs. Hilal Rather, Irshad, Sameer Khajuria and Vikram claimed one wicket apiece for Simula Club. For his good batting display, Dhruv Mahajan was declared man of the match. Later-on, the chief guest and the guest of honour awarded track-suits, trophies and mementoes to the members of both the teams in the final.
Chief Guest, Jaipal Singh in his address while lavishing praise on the organizers for smooth and successful conduct of this sporting extravaganza, said that the main phase will be more exciting and will serve as a launching pad for the cricketers in general and the youth of rural areas in particular in expediting their cricketing talent and skill.
The guest of honour, A Madan while addressing a gathering lauded the efforts of the Department of Youth Services and Sports in providing technical inputs to the organizers and said that the main phase of the league analogous to Kashmir Premier League will be held soon in Jammu.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were SS Bali, Deputy Director Youth Services and Sports, Rajan Sharma, Sports Officer, J&K Sports Council, Tirath Ram, District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Jammu, who was organizing secretary of the tournament, GM Wani, PYKKA Inchage DYSS, Srinagar, Ravi Singh, Manager MA Stadium and other officers and officials of the Department of Youth Services and Sports and J&K State Sports Council.
Meanwhile, the final match was officiated by Rajesh Dhar and Sadiq Hussain Malik as umpires, while Satika acted as the scorer, while the match for third place was officiated by Suresh Singh and Piyush Mahajan as umpires. The valedictory function was anchored by Rajesh Dhar and BK Tickoo, who performed the duty of commentators throughout the tournament.
