Mr Speaker it's source which forced resignation of US President | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 27: The direction of Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone to media to disclose its source while reporting is not in contravention of the Supreme Court ruling but is also symptomatic of the growing tendency of government to control the media. The media relies on its sources to get inside information about the working of the government in reporting. In a process it informs the public about any wrong doing done by the government and in the process helps it correct itself. The famour Watergate scandal, which proved involvement of US president Richard Nixon and eventually leading to his resignation, was made possible only by the inside information provided by the source called 'Deep Throat'. It was 'Deep throat'who provided information to Bob Woodward of The Washington Post in 1972 leading to biggest expose of the time and proved watershed in the history of the journalism. It was only 32-yr latter that his name was revealed to the FBI. In India also many expose, including the famour Bofors scandal, was made possible by the information provided by the source. And even 2G scam would not have surfaced withouot the source. Not even in a single case, the media was forced to reveal the name of source, which is life line of the journalism, and has been acknowledged throught the world. The media, with its profileration and power, has become the whipping boy of the govement. The media helps in building public perception and government by controlling it tries to stop it when reporting is not in their favour. It's not only that Speaker has taken this line, though he just bold enough. The ministers have expressed strong reservation over the way State Accountability Commission has issued press release about inquiries initiated by it against minsters. There is a strong perception in the government circles, that media by reporting even hard facts is doing negative reporting. During debate on corruption, when Beigh quoted reports by Early Times about wrong doings by government, law and parliamentary affairs minister AR Sagar,"Yeh Early Times kaya hai, hum saab jante hai." Even the way three ministers joined in alleging media trial against them reflects the thinking that government is not able to digest anything written against and it is trying to gag the media. It's also reflective of the growing arrogance of the government which believes that it can manipulate things in its favour. But today it has crossed that limits and its bound to generate more negative perception against the government. |
