The civil society of the state while extending full support to media in its operation expose said the corruption is a cause of concern for the common man as it is eating up the vitals of the society. Hailing the media for its role the members of civil society in the state said it will extend all cooperation to media persons in exposing the corrupt elements in the society and clean it from them. The media being the fourth estate is an important pillar of the democracy and it has played a vital role in strengthening democracy in India, said Mir Ghulam Rasool a veteran trade unionist and member of civil society Ganderbal the home constituency of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah. He said any curb on freedom of press is negation of democratic rights to the people guaranteed under the Constitution and civil society of the state will take on onus to itself by launching a forceful movement against such curbs. Mir said it was because of the independent role of media that 2 G scam, Asian Games scam and Defence scam were unearthed and truth came before the public. Not only this media in India has played an important role to protect the hard earned freedom from time to time. Whether it was Bhaglpur blinding of eighties or accesses of emergency, cement scam or Telgi scam media was on forefront in exposing the same, he added. He said this way media played its important role in preserving democracy and safeguarding the rights of the people. In other words it is the media, which is the custodian of the rights of the people of the state, he added. Supporting his views Satish Poonchi, president J&K Peoples Front said that government should not interfere in the functioning of media as free press is essence of the democracy. Enforcing curbs on independence of press will prove doom for democracy and early the government realizes this -the better, he added. Extending media full cooperation from his organization Poonchi said JKPF has already launched a campaign against corruption and corrupt elements and it will now intensify it as the J&K state has earned a dubious distinction of being the first corrupt state in the country under the coalition government led by Omar Abdullah. Poonchi said the people in the state should rise the occasion and join the campaign against corruption to take the operation expose of the media to its logical conclusion. This is the first and foremost need of the hour as people of the state are direct hit by the increasing corruption, he added. If media too will not expose the corruption then who else will raise its voice against it and bring facts before the public said, Mukesh Sharma a social activist and member of civil society Jammu. ``The way media is being attacked by the government reveals that J&K is running towards anarchy or autocratic rule''. Those who are at the helm of affairs must know that media is an important pillar of democracy and there should be no interference in its functioning'', he added. He said every newspaper is within its right to carry the stories to expose the corruption and it is not bound to reveal the source. A media men will prefer to go to jail instead of revealing the source, he said and this precedence, was created by pressmen at various places in the country, he added.
