Police lathicharge striking trade unionists in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 28 : Police today lathicharged striking trade unionists during a rally held here in protest against "anti-labour" policies of the Centre. The police resorted to baton charge and fired coloured water cannons to disperse the rally of trade unionists at Sher-e-Kashmir Park here after they tried to block a road, police said. The protestors were asked by police to disperse peacefully, but when they refused the security forces resorted to lathicharge. Police claimed that no one was injured in the incident, but some of the protestors were detained and lodged at Police station Kothibagh. Condemning the police action on the trade union activists CPI(M) state secretary M Y Tarigami said, "Such tactics cannot silence the voice of the people." He said the trade unions will continue to raise the issues of the working class people. President of Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee of Trade Unions Mohammad Maqbool said the present economic and "anti-working class policies" of the Centre had wreaked havoc in the lives of common man. "The uncontrolled price rise, huge unemployment and outsourcing have made the life of workers miserable," he added. |
