Congress against altering 3-year old political arrangement in J&K
2/28/2012 11:46:42 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Feb 28 Whether the Congress fares well or not in the Assembly poll in five states, for which the results are expected to be announced next month, the party has no plans to alter the political arrangement it has finalized with the National Conference for running the Government in Jammu and Kashmir till 2014.
Congress sources said that despite some problems being created by the National Conference for the party headed Saif-ud-Din Soz the Congress leadership in Delhi is against any change in the arrangement.
In reply to a question the Congress circles did not rule out the possibility of National Conference trying to explore the possibility of running the Government on its own by securing support from the expelled seven BJP MLAs and some independent legislators.
However, they said that here was no possibility for the National Conference to muster simple majority in the 89-member State Assembly. Elaborating it sources said with the support of seven expelled BJP MLAs the strength of the National Confer ence is expected to go up to 35 and two to three independent MLAs may support it to make it to 39 or 40 which is still short of four members.
Asked if the Congress would like to give support to the NC Government without sharing power a senior Congress leader said that such possibilities were remote because "we will not allow the NC leadership to indulge in malpractices." "If we have decided to share power with the National Conference we done so to be able to act as a watchdog and prevent NC leadership from committing political, financial and constitutional irregularities," he added.
The congress circles said that the party high command has decided to ensure that the political arrangement, finalised in 2008,remained intact till the next Assembly poll which is due in 2014.
They said any change in the political arrangement at this juncture could increase political instability in state polity.
