Duration of Amarnath yatra depends on Raksha Bandhan date:SASB | | | early times report Jammu, Feb 29: Facing flak for curtailment of yatra period, Shri Amar-nath Shrine Board (SASB) today said the duration depended on the date of Raksha Bandhan, the day on which the pilgrimage concludes. Reac-ting to media reports on curtailment of the yatra duration to 39 days this year against 46 days in 2011, SASB CEO R K Goyal said the period depended on the date of Raksha Bandhan. He said that in 2010 the yatra duration was of 56 days as Raksha Bandhan fell on August 24. Last year Raksha Bandhan was on August 13 and the duration was reduced by 10 days. This year, Raksha Bandhan falls on August 2 and therefore the yatra duration has been further reduced to 39 days. He said it was not possible to advance the commencement date bec-ause the path leading to the shrine are covered under heavy snow and it took time to be cleared. Next year, however, Raksha Bandhan fall on August 21 and the yatra would be 19 days longer than this year, the CEO added. |
