| Mehbooba criticizes Government | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 29: Admiring the media for not succumbing, Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti criticized the government for mishandling the situation that arose in the backdrop of controversial remarks made by Speaker in the assembly. "The situation could have been avoided, had they handled the media the way they behaved today", Mehbooba told a local news agency. She said that media was the fourth pillar of democracy and a bridge between government, legislature and the people. She regretted that the proceedings of the house could not reach to the people for three days because of the boycott of the media due to the mishandling of the situation by the government. "Taking into account the importance of the media and its relevance, we took a stand and boycotted the proceedings of the house to express our solidarity with the fourth estate on one hand and registered our strong resentment over mishandling of the media by the government", Mehbooba said. The PDP president said: "Gagging media and barring it from taking the issues of corruption, mis-governance and maladministration to the people shows the style of functioning of this government." Mehbooba lauded the media for its role in building a vibrant and responsive society and hoped that media will continue to play its role constructively. She alleged that government has been indifferent towards the media and the people at large and regretted that the proceedings of the house could not reach the people due to the rigidity of the government. |
