PIL against govt move to build colony on forest land | | | early times report JAMMU, Mar 1: On the alleged issue of raising a colony on forest land, a high court division bench of Justice J P Singh and Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir today directed the government to produce the relevant record to find out if it had complied with the the provisions of section 2 of J&K Forest (Conservation) Act 1997. The court directive came in a PIL filed by Panthers Party's Bhim Singh wherein he alleged that 623 kanal 10 marlas of forest land wasbeing transferred to JDA. He alleged that DFO, Jammu, had been directed to hand overthe forest land to JDA. Bhim also alleged that the chief minister, to please his party men and disgruntled associates, had found a novel project to build colony on the aforesaid land. The one million people of Jammu were being made to suffer by the destruction of forest and greenery around the city for the pleasure of politicians in power and the highflying bureaucrats, he alleged. The petitioner, in the interest of public at large, sought the indulgence of the court to protect the fundamental rights of the people through this PIL and demanded quashment of the June 10, 1998, government order in this regard. The division bench, directed the state to produce record before ordering the transfer of 623 kanals and 10 marlas of forest land to JDA. |
