Give weight to quality and not quantity in education sector: Experts | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 1: Educationists have suggested to the state Government to lay emphasis on improving the quality of education in schools and colleges instead of concentrating on increasing the number of educational institutions in Jammu and Kashmir. Besides these educationists, former Minister for Education, Harsh Dev Singh, has said that as a result of lack of basic infrastructure in the shape of proper classrooms, laboratories and libraries the pass percentage in Government run schools has been quite low. He said that in over 200 schools the pass percentage in 1oth and 12th class examinations during the last two academic sessions, conducted by the state Board of School Education, has been as bad as zero. The Panthers Party leader has said that it was because of the proper infrastructural facilities in private educational institutions that the pass percentage in 10th and 12th class examinations has varied between 80 and 100. The educationists besides Harsh Dev Singh have suggested to the Government to open need based new schools and colleges instead of going in for a mushroom growth in these educational institutions where the basic teaching facilities were absent. Referring to the plan of opening new women colleges in those districts where there was no college for fair sex Harsh Dev and others supported the idea but wanted the Government to develop the basic facilities. Harsh said that new colleges and schools opened in the state since 2006 were yet to taste proper infrastructural development with the result the student community was the main sufferer. These educationists wanted the Government to initiate measures for providing proper classrooms so that teachers were not forced to hold the classes in the open. The Government, they added, need to give weightage to quality instead of quantity. |
