| Govt grilled over 'status' of Central Universities | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 1: The coalition government was grilled in the Assembly today over shortcomings in terms of inadequate infrastructure and delay in settlement of issues on account of which the two Central universities in the state have not become fully functional and operational. Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik faced a volley of supplementary questions from both opposition and treasury benches who expressed serious concern over the existing status of the two academic institutions. During the question hour the matter was first raised by J&K Pantehrs Party MLA Yahspal Kundal who sought to know the reasons for delay in transferring land to Central University in order to make it fully functional today instead of operating in a rented accommodation. Even as the concerned minister tried to give answer with statistical figures , the matter only prompted a volley of supplementaries from many members. While some raised the queries over land , others spoke about less number of streams having been started in the Jammu Central University. Some members from the opposition also questioned about lack of adequate staff and other facilities in the both the Central Universities, which they contended had served no purpose to the students. Most of the members suggested introducing new courses and streams in the two academic institutions which were not available in the other existing Universities in the state. The members also suggested the need for introducing professional courses so that these could lessen the burden of unemployment rather than adding the to the numbers of unemployed youth upon their completion of the courses. Though government tried to present its version for delay on some crucial fronts, the members did not look at these as 'satisfactory' and complete with reason. However, giving reply to the main question the Minister informed the Legislative Assembly that about 4641 kanals and 4325 kanals of land has been identified for the establishment of the Central Universities at Jammu and Kashmir respectively, out of which 3000 kanals and 3321 kanals stands transferred to these Universities. He said the process of transferring the remaining land is in progress. Harsh Dev Singh, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, M.Y Tarigami, A.R. Veeri, Er. Abdul Rashid, Charanjeet Singh, Ashwani Sharma and Peerzada Mansoor Hussain raised supplementaries to the main question for making these Central Universities fully functional with introducing job oriented courses and modern infrastructure. They also raised the issue of land compensation to those land owners whose land has been acquired for the purpose. |
