Congress stumps NC over Sheikh Abdullah, resolution withdrawn
'Bharat Ratna for NC founder'

Syed Junaid Hashmi
Jammu, Mar 1: In a bizarre political development, Congress today stumped National Conference (NC) in the legislative council by ensuring withdrawal of the resolution seeking declaration of Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah a National Hero and incorporating his vision of unity in the text books of board of school education.
Eight National Conference (NC) MLCs which included its leader in the upper house Khalid Najeeb Suhrawardy and Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah's companion, known widely as man behind 'Aatish-e-Chinaar', Mohammed Yousuf Taing pressed hard but to no avail. The mover Dr. Bashir Ahmed Veeri was seemingly forced to withdraw the 'extra-ordinary' resolution by NC-Congress government, which was being represented by Minister for Health and Medical Education R.S.Chib.
Referring to Congress instead of government might invite wrath of the chairman but Chib was replying on behalf of Minister for School Education who is NC founder Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah's grandson and presently head of the state Omar Abdullah. It is million dollar question if Omar Abdullah would have also forced his own NC MLC to withdraw a resolution seeking recognition of his grand father's contribution at the national and the state level.
Chib seemed to have come prepared to ensure that resolution is withdrawn. On the other side of it, Omar had seemingly not been briefed by his aides that Veeri was bringing a resolution pertaining to school education department in the legislative council. He was absent. Though Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ali Mohammed Sagar alongwith Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani were both present the house, Omar had surprisingly asked Chib to reply on his behalf.
It all started with NC MLC Dr. Basheer Ahmed Veeri moved a resolution that keeping in view contribution of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah in bringing revolutionary socio-economic reforms in the state, he should be declared a National Hero and his visions and philosophy of Hindu, Muslim, Sikh Eithad (Unity) be incorporated in the syllabus and text books of Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education.
With PDP's Murtaza Khan in chair, Veeri spoke at length about contribution of Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah. He called Sheikh tallest leader of South Asia. Even during Veeri speech, Chib was seen pleading with Khan to ask Veeri to cut short his speech. After Veeri, Deputy Chairman and Congress MLC Mohammed Yousuf Taing made a brief speech, reciting couplets in Sheikh's honour.
He advised that resolution should be amended and government should be asked to recommend NC founder Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah's name to government of India's highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna'. After making the speech, Taing replaced Khan on the Chair. Dharam Veer Singh Oberoi of NC praised Sheikh for keeping the communal Harmony intact even during troubled times. Ajay Kumar Sadhotra asked the members not to play politics over Sheikh Abdullah.
NC's leader in the upper house Khalid Najeeb Suhrawardy complimented Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah for historic 'land to tiller' legislation. He said that leaders of India and Pakistan seemingly hatched a conspiracy against Sheikh Sahab and got him arrested under conspiracy case in the year 1953. "They were terrified of Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah's Land to Tiller legislation. They knew if sheikh was not arrested, he would ignite a fire across the two nations against big landlords," Khalid said.
These big landlords were in Congress and Muslim League, Khalid said. Sheikh Ghulam Rasool and Javed Rana also spoke in support of the resolution. Replying to the resolution on behalf of Chief Minister, Congress MLC and Minister for Health and Medical Education R.S.Chib first made a long drawn speech about Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah's contribution and then, threw a shocker by asking the member to withdraw.
He said "I appeal Mr. Veeri not to press for adopting the resolution. Government would ask General Administration Department (GAD) to take necessary steps in conformity with sense of house for recognizing Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah's contribution. There is no need to press for resolution since we are not opposing it." However, Sheikh Ghulam Rasool, Ajay Sadhotra and Khalid Najeeb Suhrawardy stood up and began asking Chib to allow adopting the resolution.
However, Chib reiterated his stand. Intervening in-between, Deputy Chairman and companion of Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, Mohammed Yousuf Taing asked Veeri not to press for voting and withdrawn the resolution. Finding the support vanishing, Veeri withdrew the resolution. Congress had the last laugh.
