| Doda people living in deplorable conditions: Wani | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Mar 2: MLA Doda Abdul Majid Wani wanted similar treatment and a special thrust of the government for improvement in living conditions of people in remote & distantly located pockets of Doda constituency.
In his statement MLA Doda said that Doda constituency, characterized by high proportion of rural population, is suffering from chronic economic backwardness. "With mountainous topography & steep slopes, people have limited availability of land for agricultural operations. But, a poor connectivity along with nil opportunities available in manufacturing, tourism & power sectors force people to seek employment only in agriculture which suffers chronically from low/ off grade productivity, he said.
Citing official data, MLA Doda stated that per the survey conducted by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics (J&K) in the year 2007-08, the worst incidence of poverty is exhibited in few remotely located and difficult areas of Doda constituency where people, living below the poverty line are astonishingly more than 50% per cent as against the state average of 21.63 percent. "Doda constituency has an average literacy rate of 55% which is far lesser than the highest estimated literacy rate of 83.73 % recorded in district Jammu, he said and added Srinagar, Jammu and Kathua are among the top three ranked districts in terms of gross per capita Income whiles erstwhile Doda District, Kupwara and Kargil are the bottom three regions. |
