WD to hit Kashmir valley, rain, snow expected

SRINAGAR, Mar 2 : More trouble is in store for the people of the Kashmir valley as fresh Western Disturbances (WD) will touch the region on Sunday and will remain active till Monday.People in the Ladakh region continued to shiver as the minimum dropped by several notches this morning while world famous ski resort of Gulmarg was coldest in the Valley after the minimum dropped further to minus 9.5 degree Celsius.A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that weather will remain mainly dry over the Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.
However,the WD,originating in the Arabian sea will enter the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan on March 4. There could be fairly widespread rain or snow from the evening of March 4 to 5.Leh in Ladakh region, which remained cut off from the rest of the state since December 1 last year after the Zojila pass was closed for six winter months due to snowfall, was coldest in the region after the minimum temperature dropped by 4.8 notches. The spokesman against yesterday's minus 5 degree, it was minus 9.8 degree this morning.
At border town of Kargil, the minimum was minus 9.2 degree against yesterday's minus 7.8 degree.
After witnessing harsh winter, during the 70-day-long three chillas, which ended on February 29, people in the summer capital, Srinagar, finally had some respite from the cold.The sun was out today, after the minimum was recorded at zero degree, one degree below normal this morning. Met spokesman said the maximum will remain above normal while minimum will be one notch up tomorrow though the sky would remain partly cloudy. But the joy will not last long as Met department has issued a forecast for rain or snow on Sunday and Monday.There was also a minor drop in the minimum temperature elsewhere in the Kashmir valley because of open sky.The famous ski resort of Gulmarg was coldest in the Valley after the minimum dropped further to minus 9.5 degree, a notch below than yesterday.At world famous health resort of Pahalgam, the minimum was minus 5.6 degree followed by Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, minus 1.2 degree, Kokernag minus 0.7 degree and Kupwara minus 0.5 degree.
