Centre offers IB training to new intelligence officers
8/1/2006 5:54:57 PM
Mumbai, Aug 1: In the wake of the recent serial blasts in Mumbai, the Maharashtra government has decided to set up a new wing of dedicated officers to gather intelligence on subversive activities.

The Centre has agreed to train the officers, who would be permanently posted in the state intelligence department, official sources said today.

Employing officers permanently rather than the present system of asking police officers to do short stints would prove to be more effective in thwarting subversive activities, they said.

State's top police officers recently held a meeting with Union Home Secretary V K Duggal, in which the Centre offered to train the new intelligence officers, the sources added.

The Centre has offered facilities at its Intelligence Bureau for training the new wing of intelligence officers, who will join and retire in the state intelligence department, they added.

Apart from initial training, IB has also offered periodical refresher training courses that will keep intelligence officers abreast with the trends in terrorist activities, sources said.

Of the present strength of nearly 600 officers in entire state, the state intelligence department plans to recruit nearly half or 300 officers as intelligence officers in the next three to four years, sources said.

Their recruitment will be directly done by Maharashtra Public Service Commission, and screening methods like aptitude testing are likely to be introduced to ensure that only those with the right attitude join the service, sources said.
