Cabinet reshuffle after assembly session? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 3: The long overdue cabinet expansion in the State is likely to take place after the present session of the legislature ends, highly placed sources told Early Times. With the decks getting cleared for the much awaited cabinet reshuffle hectic lobbying has started both within the NC and the Congress party. Both veterans and new faces have started pressing the right connections to get a berth in the cabinet. The Congress has two slots to be filled while the NC can fill up one slot. Last slot for the Congress fell vacant when R&B minister G.M. Saroori resigned following allegations of arranging a proxy for his daughter who was taking a medical entrance exam. The State chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and the NC supremo, Dr. Farooq Abdullah are presently being approached by the probables as per the sources. Among those garnering support for induction into the State cabinet are Omar's uncle and NC MLA, Mustafa Kamal, Chowdhary Ramzan, Mir Saifullah and Sheikh Gulam Rasool, former chief secretary and NC MLC. The Congress has aspirants like Saroori, Sharief Naaz, Gulam Ahmad Mir and a few others. Besides inducting some new faces into the cabinet, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is also likely to reshuffle some important portfolios among the existing senior cabinet ministers, if sources are to be believed. Some 'non-performers' would be either given innocuous positions in the cabinet or straightaway shown the door, said the some sources. Omar Abdullah is reportedly not happy with the performance of some of his NC ministers and it is also said that the Congress high command has been feeling embarrassed because of the misdemeanor of some of its ministers in the State. Sources said the equation is so delicately poised that dropping a minister from the State cabinet could cause major problems for both the Congress and the NC. At least, two present ministers of the Congress have started becoming 'huge liabilities for the high command' Congress sources in New Delhi told Early Times. The Chief Minister himself has, as per sources, voiced his resentment against the functioning of some of the Congress ministers to their party high command. "Omar Abdullah has been told to allow the Congress high command to take care of its liabilities while Omar should address the problem of non-performers in the NC," said a Congress source in Delhi. Without give any indication of resentment or disagreement it is likely that with the forthcoming cabinet reshuffle the Chief Minister would be addressing the problem of non-performers and also those against whom there has been a public outcry in the recent past. Whatever way one looks at it, the likely cabinet reshuffle/expansion is going to be an opportunity for the aspirants to try their luck getting the coveted cabinet berths and at the same time an opportunity for the NC and the Congress high commands to address the problem of non-performers and the deadwood. |
