Lacking land bank, Housing Boards fails to construct a single colony
3/4/2012 12:35:38 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 3: Jammu and Kashmir Housing Board, established to provide low cost housing to the people, has failed to serve its purpose as the said board still don't have its own land bank to construct housing colonies even after 35 years of its inception. Sources said that the Board, established in 1976 to meet the demands of growing urban sector by constructing low cost houses, had not completed any of the colonies initiated by it in past over three decades, crashing the dreams of common people who are in need of roof over their heads.
They said that while the private estate builders are raising new modern colonies across the length and breadth of Jammu and Kashmir, the Board has diverted its attention towards construction of ITIs, Polytechnics and other projects of the government. The Board, constituted with the main objective of constructing residential buildings and to develop new colonies, besides taking up commercially viable projects for providing better housing facilities to the people of the state as per their economic status. A senior officer alleged that efficient 'babus' sitting on the high posts know the art of raising money to fill the coffers of the Housing Board, but when it comes to delivering services to their consumers they simply close their eyes.
"The Board has failed to generate revenue because most of the projects taken by it were never completed and for which the people have bitter experiences. Even the construction of flats at Kathua, Reasi and Channi are behind schedule. They were to be completed in 2010, but now their date has been pushed to March 2012" said an official on the condition of anonymity.
'Recently the Board management has claimed that they are in the process of acquiring 3000 kanals of land at Meen Charkan, 300 kanals of land at Rajouri, Kishtwar and Doda for development of colonies as well as construction of flats, but process is going on at snail's pace.
